The Glow Up Of the Waxing Moon & The Magic of Fermentation

The full moon in March 2025, commonly referred to as the “Worm Moon,” occurred on Friday, March 14th, at 2:55 AM ET, and coincided with a total lunar eclipse, also known as a “Blood Moon.” During this time, we held a full moon camp-out fermentation workshop, where we worked in teams to create a delightful feast.

As we shared stories, we thought you might find this one particularly intriguing. Lacto-fermentation has distinct “seasons” that align with lunar cycles.

For those interested in the scientific aspect, I recommend reading the publication “Cosmic Influences” by Dolisko, Eugen, and L. Kolisko (Agriculture of Tomorrow – originally published in 1939).

Around each moon change, approximately five days before the full and new moon, probiotics exhibit their highest growth activity.

  • On the night of the full moon, they are at their peak.
  • Conversely, during the new moon, their activity declines significantly, leading to a drop in the quality of lacto-fermented foods.

Immediately after the moon changes, activity ceases (essentially dormant) for at least five days.

After five days, activity resumes, continuing to grow until the next moon change.

The phase leading up to the new moon is especially potent for lacto-fermentation. This is when fruits are typically juicier and sweeter, and plant growth accelerates.

This is an enhanced growing period—your kefir will thrive!

Similarly, the days leading to the full moon are effective.

The full moon is a time when animals, insects, and parasites are most active. Predominantly, intestinal parasites make their home in the colon and other digestive organs.

The human digestive system is often referred to as “the second brain,” where these parasites reside and can provoke instinctual behaviours (like hunger or aggression) to ensure their survival.

Folklore tells of people acting unusually during the full moon, which is how the term “lunatics” originated.

For fermentation enthusiasts, the wonderful news is that lacto-fermentation creates an environment that is hostile to these critters, helping restore a healthy body ecology.
