… the original smoothie
Way back to the 1920s. Orange Julius 🍊
Peeps in line would shout “Give me an orange, Julius!”
Here is a version of the original smoothie. (Serves 2)
1 cup of coconut water
2-3 tablespoons kefir
A couple of cool lightly steamed carrots / fermented carrot / fresh carrot juice
Good chunk of frozen papaya
2 tablespoons frozen fresh orange juice (freeze in ice cubes)
1-2 tablespoons kefir coconut cheeze / almond / hemp / tiger nut butter
Optional dash of sweetness (raw local honey, etc.)
Blend, taste and add ingredients for more flavor or sweetness.
Jaffa Julius
Add 1 teaspoon of cacao powder / nibs.
Drip 1/4 cup raw cacao syrup around the edge of a tall glass before pouring smoothie. (cacao powder, coconut oil and water/ water kefir/coconut water)
Mint adds a lift to any smoothie
Add fresh chocolate mint.
Mint comes in many varieties.
Peppermint has long been used as a digestive aid. Super gut-loving smoothie 🤗
Chocolate mint has a divine fragrance in the garden and food.
Top smoothies with fresh mint leaves, too.
Additions
Add vanilla bean /paste or powder.
Add 1/2 cup of berries and replace some of the coconut water with rose water
Add a handful of strawberries and chia gel.
While fresh turmeric or my fave fermented ginger and turmeric in lime juice or golden paste is especially great in Orange Julius, a pinch of ground spice or a dash of lacto-fermented brine is good too.
The slightly pungent flavor is well masked.
Add a handful of fresh picked or foraged greens. Wheat grass juice can be added, if you care for the taste.
Add filleted aloe (powerful adaptogen)
Adaptogen is a natural substance to help the body adapt to stress- combined with kefir … will blast any stress away. 😘 also an incredible anti-inflammatory – hence why it is used for sun exposure.
Enjoy 😊 I can hear you shouting for your Orange Julius 🍸
Here’s to happy gut bacteria. Xxoo Lynnie
