The clinical realm of mental health often involves a culture where the consumption of convenient, high-fat, or high-sugar foods has become commonplace. These foods, which conflict with our evolutionary background, not only compromise our nutritional health but also have significant effects on the microbiome and ultimately the brain. We hope that ongoing and future research will shed light on how the clay fermentation pots of our ancestors may relate to the emerging field of nutritional psychiatry. As Hippocrates famously stated, “All disease begins in the gut.” Fermented foods help restore the proper balance of bacteria in our digestive system. A happy gut leads to a happy mind. By fermenting our foods before consumption, we essentially give our bodies a head start on digestion, as the beneficial bacteria in these foods act like an external support system for our gut. |
