Life lessons on beauty, character, empathy, singleness, homelessness and why actions speak louder than appearances

Quote of the Day by Audrey Hepburn: “Make-up can only make you look…

The quote, “Make-up can only make you look pretty on the outside but it doesn’t help if you’re ugly on the inside.

Unless you eat the make-up,” offers insight into how true attractiveness is shaped more by personality and behaviour than by physical appearance.

Recently, I overheard a conversation with a man who said, “When my teeth are all fixed, look out, bitches.” This statement really caught me off guard because it not only lacks respect but also reveals a lot about his character, even if he claims it was all said in jest.

What are your thoughts on this?

I have had the privilege of serving in the community alongside individuals who often are described as broken—those experiencing homelessness. Homelessness is not simply the absence of housing. It is often an interruption in a person’s journey through life. Some people have been stopped by violence. Others by illness, addiction, grief, economic hardship, trauma, or systems that failed to catch them when they fell.

If life is a pilgrimage, then homelessness is not the end of the road. It is a place where the path has been broken.

We should create pathways of restoration: safe places to begin again, environments suited to individual needs, and opportunities to heal, learn, contribute, and belong. People experiencing homelessness are not a problem to be managed. They are all fellow pilgrims into life.

Humans were designed for connection. The topic with rotten teeth has arisen multiple times, as many believe that fixing their teeth would help them attract a good partner.

However, I truly believe that a genuine connection is drawn by character and the depth of one’s heart, rather than just a perfect smile.

Many people turn to such quotes to better understand human nature in simple, relatable terms.

Rooted in everyday observation and expressed with humour, the message reminds us that qualities such as kindness, honesty, compassion, and respect leave a far greater impact than outward beauty alone.

Over time, it has become a meaningful reflection on self-worth, encouraging people to develop inner character rather than relying solely on external appearance.

Make-up can only make you look pretty on the outside but it doesn’t help if you’re ugly on the inside.

Audrey Hepburn

“The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.
True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.
It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”
― Audrey Hepburn

The timeless beauty of Audrey Hepburn, as captured in the famous quote, reminds us that true beauty transcends physical appearance.

Hepburn, an iconic figure in both cinema and humanitarian work, became synonymous with grace, elegance, and kindness.

Her career as an actress, marked by roles in beloved films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) and Roman Holiday (1953), earned her the admiration of millions. However, it was her personal dedication to humanitarian causes that set her apart as a model of inner beauty. Working as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, she demonstrated that true beauty lies in one’s actions, compassion, and ability to touch lives in meaningful ways.

The idea that beauty emanates from within has been a central theme in many cultures for centuries.

In ancient Greece, philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle argued that true beauty is a reflection of one’s character and virtues. This philosophy has been echoed in art and literature through the ages, from the Renaissance to the modern era, where artists often portrayed inner beauty through symbolic representations of the soul.

Audrey Hepburn’s quote continues this tradition by highlighting that love, care, and passion are the essential qualities that define a woman’s beauty, qualities that only deepen and mature with age.

Internationally, Hepburn’s legacy has influenced how we view beauty and aging.

Her words, paired with her life’s work, emphasize that women grow more beautiful over time, not because of external appearances, but because of their wisdom, kindness, and the love they give.

In celebration of Women, we are reminded of how essential it is to honour the contributions of women, not only for their external beauty but for their ability to nurture, uplift, and lead with compassion.

Audrey Hepburn’s message continues to inspire new generations to see beauty in the soul, encouraging women everywhere to embrace their true selves.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Celebrated on February 11 to promote full and equal access to and participation in STEM fields for women.

Mother’s Day: Celebrated on the second Sunday of May (e.g., in Australia, the US, and Canada) to honour the contributions and sacrifices of mothers and maternal figures.

International Day of Rural Women: Celebrated on October 15 to recognize the critical role and contribution of rural women in enhancing agricultural and rural development.

Ada Lovelace Day: Celebrated on the second Tuesday of October to raise the profile of women in STEM and celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and maths.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Day: Celebrated on November 19 to empower, celebrate, and support women in business and their endeavours worldwide.

As women attain increased financial and emotional independence, they are now assessing relationships based on character and safety.

When I chose to stop searching for a partner and instead focus on discovering my purpose, my life improved almost instantly. Embracing singlehood has become a conscious decision to safeguard my personal peace in an unpredictable world.

Rather than viewing it as a downgrade, intentional singlehood is considered a means to prioritize personal growth and well-being. I have come to realize that my energy is the most precious gift I can offer. Like many women, I refuse to squander it pursuing something that drains me.

We are focused on building our own lives and legacies, which in itself is a beautiful love story.

Thank you for reminding us that every person deserves more than simply being moved out of sight and that beauty is the magic that shines from within. You’re not meant to do life alone. Today, I see struggles everywhere. People don’t need solutions. They need connection. They need belonging. They need community. Find your tribe.
